A call for International Code on Food and Non-alcoholic Beverages to Children
March 15th 2008 was World Consumer Rights Day. The day was chosen by two international organizations concerned with children's health - Consumers International (CI) and the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) - to launch proposals to drastically restrict the scope and scale of the marketing of unhealthy food to children across the globe.
The coalition is calling for an International Code on Marketing of Food and Non-alcoholic Beverages to Children to be adopted by national governments and the food and advertising industries, as part of the World Health Organization's (WHO) strategy to tackle obesity and diet-related diseases. The Code, which its sponsors will be recommending to the World Health Assembly in May 2008, tackles the failures of the food industry to regulate itself. Adoption of the Code would be major step in helping to protect children, not only from advertising on television and radio but also from internet and satellite TV marketing which lie outside national jurisdictions.
'The proposal is aimed at protecting all children, whether or not their national governments have the capacity to regulate marketing of fatty and sugary foods,' said Dr Tim Lobstein of IOTF. 'There are currently over 150 million overweight children in the world and the figure is rising rapidly. Companies must change their selling practices or they may be forced to do so.'
Details of the proposed Code of Marketing can be found at www.iotf.org/IASOmarketingreleaseMarch1508.htm and http://www.consumersinternational.org/

New WHO Growth Reference data for children and adolescents 5-19 years
WHO has recently published growth reference data for children and adolescents, 5-19 years (or 61-228 months). The WHO Reference 2007 is a reconstruction of the 1977 National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)/WHO reference. It uses the original NCHS data set supplemented with data from the WHO child growth standards sample for under-fives. The same statistical methodology was used as in the construction of the WHO standards. This reference complements the WHO child growth standards for 0-60 months published in April 2006 (WHO Child Growth Standards). Read more here (http://www.who.int/growthref/en/).

World Breastfeeding Week 2008 (1-7 August) - Mother Support : Going for the Gold
WABA has recently announced that the theme of World Breastfeeding Week 2008 (1-7 August) is Mother Support : Going for the Gold. As every country sends its best athletes to compete at these global games, WABA maintains that it is important to remind ourselves that, in a similar fashion, a healthy young athlete can only emerge from a healthy start on life. There is no question that optimal infant and young child feeding is essential for optimal growth and development. WBW 2008 calls for greater support for mothers in achieving the gold standard of infant feeding: breastfeeding exclusively for six months, and providing appropriate complementary foods with continued breastfeeding for up to two years or beyond. Read full announcement at http://worldbreastfeedingweek.org/pdf/WBW2008Announcement.pdf  and stay updated with ideas for action, activities, downloadable materials, reports etc at www.worldbreastfeedingweek.org

Global Food Security and Nutrition Forum (FSN Forum)
The Agricultural Development Economics Division (ESA) of FAO invites you to participate in the FSN Forum. The purpose of this Forum is to provide an online platform where practitioners can share their experiences and resources, provide peer coaching and support and find collective solutions to issues related to Food Security and Nutrition (FS&N), with a focus on FS&N Policies and Strategies. Discussions will take place on the Forum’s mailing list and directly on the Forum’s website http://km.fao.org/fsn/. The Web site is also an important pool of relevant resources and information on FSN. The forum is public. Joining the forum is free, voluntary and open to anyone interested in contributing advice, experience and expertise for use by others, or for adapting others’ advice, experience and expertise for their own use.
The forum was launched on 16th October 2007 with an e-discussion on “Promoting food security and nutrition information for improved decision making and response”, facilitated by Mark Smulders, Coordinator of the FAO-FIVIMS Programme.
To become a member of this community, please register on the Forum’s Web site. If you need more information please contact Ms. Huyen Tran, Forum Moderator at huyen.tran@fao.org or fsn-moderator@fao.org
