Acknowledgements

The preparation of this Update on the Nutrition Situation, 1994, which extends results from the Second Report on the World Nutrition Situation (1992-3), benefitted from many contributions and inputs. Funding support from SIDA (Sweden) and IDRC (Canada) is gratefully acknowledged. As always, the advice and encouragement from the ACC/SCN's Advisory Group on Nutrition was most important - Chairman Professor Reynaldo Martorell; members during 1993-1994: Dr Ken Bailey, Ms Marcia Griffiths, Mr Richard Heyward, Professor Jak Jervell, Mr Simon Maxwell, Ms Julia Tagwireyi, Professor George Beaton was Special Advisor to the SCN during this period.

The overall compilation, analysis, and production of the report were helped by Aamir Qureshi and Howarth Bouis at IFPRI, and Viki Elliot, Jane Hedley and Jane Wallace at the ACC/SCN in Geneva.

The country material in Chapter 2 was reviewed by many people, and constructive inputs are especially acknowledged from: J. Balachander, W. Bender, M. Bloem, H. Bouis, R. Florentino, S. Gillespie, A. Hussain, R. Longhurst, J. Lupien, S. Maxwell, C. Monteiro, D. Pelletier, P. Rao, V. Reddy, M. Ruel, C. Victora, T. Scialfa, K. Smler, K. Subbarao. Exchange of anthropometric data is gratefully acknowledged with M. DeOnis (WHO), T. Wardlaw (UNICEF), and the staff of Macro International, Demographic and Health Surveys. Collaboration in providing data on economics is gratefully acknowledged from D. Cieslokowski (World Bank), and for various food indicators from L. Naiken (FAO). The data on health were kindly provided by D. Mafat (WHO). B. Rodriquez (UNICEF) and V. Elliot helped in the analysis in Chapter 1.

The information on nutrition of refugees and displaced people in Chapter 3 stemmed from an initiative of the ACC/SCN's Working Group on the Nutrition of Refugees and Displaced People, chaired by J. Katona-Apte (WFP) and R. Bhatia (UNHCR). The Refugee Nutrition Information System is supported financially by CIDA, NORAD, UNHCR, USAID1, and WFP (see details on page 58). Reports depend on the work of J. Shoham (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine) who contributed much of the original material for Chapter 3, and Jane Wallace (ACC/SCN). We are particularly grateful to R. Bhatia, J. Jervell, J. Katona-Apte, S. Rabeneck, J. Seaman, and T. Marchione, for their crucial help in initiating the RNIS. The system itself depends upon the inputs of a large number of non-governmental organizations, as given on page 58.
