Created in 2004, UN Energy ensures coherence in the multidisciplinary response of the United Nations system to the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), and supports countries in their transition to sustainable energy.  UN-Energy's work is organized around three thematic clusters:   energy access, renewable energy and energy efficiency.

UN Energy’s mandate is to:

  • promote system-wide collaboration in the area of energy with a coherent and consistent approach;
  • increase information sharing and facilitate joint programming and action-oriented approaches to co-ordination; and
  • expand collective engagement between the United Nations and other key external stakeholders.
