The Treaty The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) is an international treaty that outlaws all nuclear explosions. By totally banning nuclear testing, the Treaty seeks to constrain the qualitative improvement of nuclear weapons and to end the development of new types of nuclear weapon. It constitutes an effective measure of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation in all its aspects. The Treaty was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly and opened for signature in New York on 24 September 1996. On that day, 71 States signed the Treaty.

In October, nearly 200 countries struck a landmark deal to reduce the emissions of powerful greenhouse gases, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), in a move that could prevent up to 0.5°C of global warming by the end of this century. The amendment to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, which is hosted by UN Environment, is the single biggest step the world has taken to limit global warming.
