HLCP: Urbanization 19.10.2016

The international community is gathering in Quito, Ecuador, in October 2016 for the Third UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III) to renew its global commitment to sustainable urbanization and a “New Urban Agenda.” As an input to the conference, CEB, in April 2016, adopted a Statement in with the Board’s members pledged their collective support to Member States in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda. 

CEB: Contributing to a "New Urban Agenda" 23.02.2017

The General Assembly in its resolution 67/216 encouraged the United Nations system to effectively contribute and actively participate in the third UN conference on housing and sustainable urban development (Habitat III) to be held in Istanbul, Turkey, in October 2016, as well as the preparatory process leading up to it.  The conference is expected to result in the reinvigoration of the global commitment to housing and sustainable urban development and the implementation of a “New Urban Agenda.”  Cities are engines

CEB: Box 2.8: Addressing the urbanization of poverty 23.02.2017

Achieving the MDGs, particularly the goal of halving poverty by 2015, requires that poverty reduction programmes give more attention to urban areas. According to UN estimates, virtually all population growth expected in the world during 2000-2015 will be concentrated in urban areas, and the urban population will rise from 2.8 billion in 2000 to 3.8 billion in 2015. The global population is expected to increase at an annual rate of less than 1 percent per annum, or 0.84 percent over the next fifteen years.

Appointed Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) at the level of Undersecretary-General by the United Nations General Assembly, Dr. Joan Clos took office at the Programme’s headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya on 18 October 2010. Born in Barcelona on 29 June 1949, he is a medical doctor with a distinguished career in public service and diplomacy.

Based on the Habitat Agenda and on Resolutions 15/6 and 17/1 of the United Nations Commission on Human Settlements, UNCHS (Habitat) has developed an indicators system that contains a set of 30 key indicators and nine qualitative data. These are the minimum data required for reporting on shelter and urban development consistent with the twenty key areas of commitment in the Habitat Agenda universal reporting format.

This report presents UN-HABITAT's main achievements in 2015. Since it's founding in 1976, Habitat for Humanity has helped more than 6.8 million people obtain a safer place to sleep at night, along with the strength, stability and independence to build better lives. In fiscal year 2015, Habitat served nearly 1.8 million people through home construction, incremental construction, rehabilitation, repairs or increased access to improved shelter through products and services.
