The Legal Advisers Network was initiated in September 2007, with the aim to increase communication among legal advisers across the system, develop consultation and knowledge sharing mechanisms to address issues of common concern and ensure, where appropriate, a better dissemination of relevant guidelines, policies and practices. It also supports a better understanding of the needs of the various bodies for which the Office of Legal Affairs (OLA) provides central legal services.
The overall objective is to improve the system-wide coherence in the provision of legal services, increase overall coherence of the UN System and attain better protection of the interests of the entities concerned, while enabling them to carry out their respective mandates more effectively for the benefit of Member States.
The sub-network of Legal Liaison Officers, which brings together the chiefs or senior legal officers of offices away from headquarters, funds and programmes, regional commissions, ad hoc tribunals and treaty bodies institutionally linked to the UN.
This sub-network includes approximately 26 members.
